Introduction#
In November 2022, the New Zealand Government (the “Government”) issued a green bond (the “2022 Green Bond”) based on the New Zealand Sovereign Green Bond Framework (the Framework”).[1] The 2022 Green Bond aimed at financing and refinancing projects related to Clean Transportation, Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, Green Buildings, Living Natural Resources and Land Use, Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity, Climate Change Adaptation, Sustainable Waste and Wastewater Management and Pollution Prevention and Control in New Zealand. In 2023, the Government engaged Sustainalytics to review the projects financed with proceeds from the 2022 Green Bond and provide an assessment as to whether the projects met the use of proceeds criteria and the reporting commitments outlined in the Framework. Sustainalytics provided a second-party opinion on the Framework in August 2022.[2]
